Enabling constraints

Reading a tweet by @mattbarcomb led me to this post - Enabling constraints are about opening possibilities by limiting choices. A short read. Coderetreat facilitators use this, and have fun doing it!... Continue

Three Simulations in One 45 Min Sprint

We run 45 minute "sprints" where pairs choose a kata to work on using ping-pong or pilot-navigator pairing, and follow each sprint with a short retrospective. For this exercise I ask everyone to agree on a single language, or choose from among two languages that everyone is OK with... Continue

We are very excited to announce this year's Global Day of Coderetreat! Self Organizing Team(s) Exercise

The following are instructions handed out to participants at a recent workshop I ran. The stated goals of the exercise are to create a micro-service based calculator, a patently absurd goal. The real purpose of the exercise is the allow the attendees to learn for themselves how to self organize, providing only as much guidance as proves necessary. The results are described below the handout. Continue

APAC Day of Coderetreat on Jun 13

As you may know, software craftsman and coderetreat culture is much weaker in APAC (Especially in China) than US and Europe. So, I got an idea to organize a day event of coderetreat (like GDCR) to promote that culture. After I talked to other GDCR organisers in China and Asia, the idea was accepted quite well. Then, the date was set at Jun 13 (Saturday). We now have 14 cities registered for this event and I created a map … Continue

Coderetreat: The toughest constraint

During the Global Day of Coderetreat 2014 I facilitated the event in Turku, Helsinki. That is when I presented the toughest constraint ever in any coderetreats I facilitated until now. Since I have a lot of constraints in the list, some time ago I started to ask the attendees how difficult would they want the constraints to be. I am asking them on scale from 1 to 5, 1 being boring, and 5 being… Continue

CoderDojo and the Global Day of Coderetreat

In the original announcement, we mentioned that the Global Day of Coderetreat will support CoderDojo.  However, we did not provide a lot of details. When Corey announced the very first Global Day of Coderetreat, he had something bigger in mind than getting a bunch of geeks together all over the world for a day of programming.… Continue

Revisiting Rescue Refactoring

For our March event we returned to Cyber-Dojo and discovered a very useful feature on Emily Bache's Refactoring Katas on Github. Way down at the bottom of each kata's explanation is a set of links (one for  each of several languages)  that create a new… Continue

Randori Fish-bowl Experiment

For the first of our monthly code retreats, we had 6 brave soles who were not deterred by snowmagedon. At this event, we experimented with a Randori fish-bowl for the first time. Here's what we did: Three chairs are setup at a small table with a shared laptop connected to the overhead projector. After an initial pair volunteered to start us off, the remainder of… Continue
